What is Health Testing?
What is Health Testing?
Health screening for Labrador diseases involves testing dogs to see whether they carry the genes which could cause them or their future offspring to suffer from an inherited disease.
There are many things that can be tested for that are genetically passed down.
Breeder said their dogs are vet checked and healthy, isn't that enough?
All that means is that they are not currently sick. It says nothing about genetic diseases or their hips and elbows.
What does it mean for me?
You could be one of the rare lucky ones, buy a non health tested puppy and have a completely healthy baby with a long life. Or you could end up with a dog with all types of issues.
Image watching your baby lay and not be able to get up every time he gets excited (EIC)
Having a dog that the skin on the poor nose peels off constantly to a bleeding mess that nothing will take care of (HNPK)
Those are just 2 diseases that are common in labs. The parents don't have to show a single symptom. A simple DNA test on the parents can tell if the puppies will have these diseases or not. MANY, MANY , MANY breeders DO NOT do these tests. I cannot come up with a single reason why they wouldn't. A breeder who doesn't test is one you want to run, not walk, away from.
That cheaper puppy will more than likely cost you a lot more money and heartache in the long run.
What am I looking for?
At a minimum you want a breeder who offers a
* Genetic Guarantee
* Health Guarantee
* Genetic Guarantee
* Hip and Elbow Guarantee
What should I do?
Ask questions, lots of questions! Any breeder who won't answer them sends up red flags! Ask to see a copy of the contract before sending a deposit or paying for puppy.
Talk to other puppy buyers. The breeder should have no problem connecting you to other buyers.....people love talking about their dogs!
